Alan B. White is chairman and CEO of PlainsCapital Corporation, the leading independent financial services company in Texas. White, whose entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to company culture is widely known in Texas financial circles, is also chairman and CEO of PlainsCapital Bank and the corporation's other member companies.
White began his banking career in 1969 at Lubbock National Bank while a student at Texas Tech University. He earned a B.B.A. in Finance from Texas Tech and continued his career in banking, working his way to senior vice president at LNB and serving on the boards of both LNB and Southwest Lubbock National Bank (an LNB affiliate).
In 1982, White was named executive vice-president of RepublicBank after that company purchased Lubbock National Bank. Over the next two years, White increased RepublicBank Lubbock's assets to $600 million, becoming its president and CEO. He resigned from RepublicBank in February 1987, eager to launch his own bank.
White formed Plains Capital Corporation in March 1987 and acquired Plains National Bank in February 1988. Since 1987, the corporation has continued to grow, broadening it's scope to include mortgage companies, capital equipment leasing, and wealth management, to name a few. Meanwhile, the bank's market share and service offering continued to increase, prompting a series of name changes. Today, PlainsCapital Corporation and PlainsCapital Bank operate a combined total of more than 100 locations in 20 states and the Cayman Islands with primary locations in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Lubbock and San Antonio.
PlainsCapital's tremendous growth is due, in large part, to White's interest in meeting the needs of people. White is passionate about building long-term relationships with employees and customers, a passion that has evolved into a strategic advantage for the company in terms of low employee turnover and strong customer loyalty.
White's tireless commitment to community involvement is also widely known, particularly in Lubbock where he continues to maintain a home. He is a longtime supporter of Texas Tech where he has served on the Texas Tech University President's Council, the Texas Tech School of Business Chief Executive's Roundtable, of which he is founding chairman and member, and as chairman of the Texas Tech Board of Regents. He has also served on the Covenant Health System Board of Trustees, the Texas Hospital Association Board and as chairman of the Methodist Hospital System Board of Trustees.
White's leadership in the community has been honored in a number of circles. Most recently, White was named a 2005 Distinguished Alumnus by the Texas Tech Alumni Association. White was inducted into the Texas Tech Athletic Hall of Legacy in 2003. He was named "Outstanding CEO" by the Texas Tech College of Business in 2001 and received the 1999 Lauro Cavazos Award by TTU Ex-Student’s Association. He was also inducted into the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce Business Hall of Fame in 2002 and was voted "Citizen of the Year" by the Chamber in 1995 and named Distinguished Alumnus of Leadership Lubbock in 1990.
Today, White leads the corporation's numerous companies, encouraging the same entrepreneurial spirit and people-focused approach that prompted him to launch PlainsCapital Corporation in 1987. His leadership role in each company is listed below:
